This morning in the news:
32 dead, 33 including the gunman, who has been identified as Cho Seung Hui, a 23 year old Korean man who is a Senior resident and English major at Virginia Tech.

Two shootings occured, one at 7:15am at a dorm, and another two hours later at a building half a mile north of the dorm. Ballistics tests confirm that one of the weapons used in the later shooting was also used in the dorm, suggesting but not proving that there was one shooter with no accomplices.

I heard about this from a mate in the US. His brother goes to VT.

That's what I used to think and you're right. I just relate desensitization to my own personal experiences. I haven't taken the time to link it to anything else. However I can't understand how watching murders on a regular basis can help.

To be honest, this pushing farther past video games everyone. While unstable people may find these games to be a staple to live their lives, and think that killing people isnt wrong. The games themselves do not cause actions like this. There has to be more going wrong upstairs than a first person shooter.

However, no matter his reasons 32 VT students are dead. Lives that had potentially great outcomes are lost because of a mentally unstable deranged individual.

Even if your brother and sister didn't get hit by bullets or fall from a window, they were still emotionally wounded by this terrible disaster. Knowing how it affects me 2400 miles away in Southern California, I can't... don't want to... imagine how it must affect people who were right there on campus. I'm so sorry this has happened to him, to the other students and faculty at VT, to the physically wounded and the dead and their families who have to endure the pain of their loss.

And to those of you debating our gun laws as bearing on this tragedy... besides looking at the fact this kind of thing never happens in Switzerland, look at Canada with their liberal gun laws as well. It never happens there either. I believe this has a lot more to do with the level of social consciousness in this country than with our gun laws. Please take note that I'm neither a hunter nor a lover or user of guns of any kind.

We'll know a lot more of why this happened whenever they publish the contents of his note.

EDITED to include Crazyvietguy in my sentiments because I just read his post and learned his sister is at VT as well. My heart goes out to everyone at VT actually.

Apparently the killer wrote some disturbing screen play before the shooting. It was requested that he went to counseling....This just makes me think long and hard about how people's minds can be so distorted.

The thing is, the school couldn't force peoples into counseling. Even thought they saw his screenplays (I saw both online and they're quiet disturbing). It should have raised the red flag over this kid's mental ability and they should have at least monitored him more carefully.

I've mass purged the posts on gun control laws due to the turn that the separate thread was taking. (an unfavorable one)

While we shouldn't turn a blind eye to reform that may be necessary or expedient to the process of a cleaner, less violent atmosphere, I'd rather we keep the actual discussion here limited to the scope of nonpolitical topics. Things get too heated in that context and some people can't keep their cool under the fire.

Very sad news. I hope everyone here who had a relative involved has not received that phonecall.

Just saw he signed a note with the name, "Ismael Ax". Let's all hope to God that's not his avatar in a video game, or we're in for another five year round of bs from the politicians.

It was a horrible tragedy and I really am sorry for the victims and their loved ones.

But it seems this thread is drawing too many political discussions and potential flames. I'm closing it now.
